Everyone knows Dr. Henry Louis Gates a University Professor and star of "Finding Your Roots." His family tree is all over the Internet. Most people don't know his wife Sharon Adams. Dr. Henry Louis Gates' wife Sharon Lynn Adams was born in 1950 in West Virginia. Sharon went to Yale and was a Professor of Fine Arts at Duke University. She is an artist, a potter and my 11th cousin. She divorced Gates in 1999.
Sharon Lynn Adams' father Edward Elwyn "Jack" Adams was a coal miner. Her mother was Doris Evelyn Lee. Sharon has two brothers, Robert and Edward, and a sister, Sandy. Below is the obituary of the mother.
"Evelyn Lee-Adams, 90, of Oak Hill, formerly of Pineville passed away on Tuesday May 22, 2018 in Bowers Hospice House. Evelyn was a member of the Pineville First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Bridge Club, Garden club, Woman’s Club Circle.
Born May 15, 1928 in Holden, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Lee (Deceased) and Mae Butcher-Lee (Deceased). In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Elwyn "Jack" Adams (1921-Deceased) whom she married on October 2, 1948 in Holden, Logan County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Logan County, WV, 1948, Page 495, Application Date: September 27, 1948); great-granddaughter, Rebecca Hope (Deceased); sister, Betty Lee-Mallory (Deceased); and brother, David Lee (Deceased).
Those left to cherish her memory include her four children, Ed Adams & wife Jo Adams of Beckley, Bob Adams & wife Teresa Adams of Pineville, Sharon Adams of Watertown MA, and Sandy Adams-Shaw of Beaver; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren."
I've taken Sharon Adams' tree back farther than this. My relationship is below.
